Mentone station and the streets between the beach and the highway
The station is on Como Parade West. Shops sit on Como Parade, Balcombe Road and Mentone Parade. Around the station the lots are tighter — townhouses, units, shared drives. Further off the highway there is usually more room, still a normal house or townhouse block. Trees take salt on the beach side and sit over roofs and courtyards further in. That is a climb-and-rig job, not a drop.
The Kingston–Bayside edge
Beaumaris starts immediately north-west — Bayside City Council, different Local Law. Cheltenham sits inland. Some streets on that north-west edge sit on the municipal line; a Mentone address is still Kingston. Parkdale starts immediately south, same Kingston council, postcode 3195, and has a full guide. Check Local Requirements Before Removing or Heavily Pruning a Tree
Mentone is City of Kingston (postcode 3194). That is not Bayside City Council. Beaumaris, next suburb north-west, is Bayside City and a different Local Law. Parkdale, next suburb south, is the same Kingston council and a different postcode (3195). No suburb-wide Vegetation Protection Overlay has been verified. Work can still need statewide Clause 52.37 (15 September 2025) or a Kingston Local Law permit.

On a house lot this usually means a large canopy tree on the front or rear boundary: more than 5 m tall, trunk more than 50 cm around at 1.4 m up, canopy at least 4 m across. A vacant lot can catch any canopy tree.
Kingston Local Law
The usual size trigger is a trunk greater than 110 centimetres at the base. Multi-stemmed trees are measured at the base. Leaf litter, views and shade are not accepted reasons.

1. Do you work throughout Mentone?
Yes. Bayside Trees is based in Black Rock and regularly works throughout Mentone — the streets around Mentone Beach and the station, the house and townhouse lots between the beach and the highway, and the blocks toward Beaumaris, Cheltenham and Parkdale. This page is Mentone, not Beaumaris and not Parkdale.
2. Can you quote from photos?
Yes, in most cases. A first price usually needs photos of the whole tree, the trunk, what sits beside it, and the way in from the street. A large tree, a tight side path, or a street near the station that will not take a chipper may still need a visit.
3. Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Mentone?
It depends. Mentone is City of Kingston, so the statewide canopy rule (Clause 52.37) can apply to a large tree on the front or rear boundary. Kingston’s Local Law can also cover a tree whose trunk is greater than 110 centimetres at the base, a multi-stemmed tree measured at the base, or a tree planted as a condition of an earlier permit. If planning rules already protect the tree, that process applies instead of the Local Law. You check and get any permit before we start.
4. Is Mentone the same as Beaumaris or Parkdale?
No. Mentone sits between them. Beaumaris is the next suburb north-west — Bayside City Council, different Local Law. Parkdale is the next suburb south — same Kingston council, postcode 3195. Some streets on the north-west edge sit on that Kingston–Bayside line; a Mentone address is still Kingston. We work in all three; send a photo and the suburb name so the quote is for the right address.
5. Who looks after street and nature-strip trees?
Kingston City Council owns street and nature-strip trees in Mentone. Residents must not prune or remove a street tree. If a street tree is a concern, call Kingston Vegetation Officers on 1300 653 356.
6. Can you work on the beach streets, the station streets and the edge lots?
Yes. Around Mentone Beach, Beach Road and the station the lots are tighter — side paths, shared drives and salt-exposed canopy on the bluff streets. Around Como Parade and the highway there are more townhouses and units. Toward Beaumaris and Cheltenham the streets are ordinary house and townhouse lots; we still check which council the address is in. We plan those as climbing and rigging work, and we check whether the chipper or grinder can sit on the street or needs a longer carry.
7. Can you help with measurements and an arborist report?
Yes. We can measure height, trunk circumference and canopy spread on site, and arrange a written arborist report when Council wants supporting documents. We do not lodge the application, and we cannot promise an approval. The owner lodges and holds the permit.
8. How much does tree work cost in Mentone?
