Sandringham Beach
Melrose Street is the short walk from the station to Sandringham Beach. Beach Road runs the foreshore. That beach is Sandringham’s — not Hampton’s, and not Half Moon Bay. Trees on those streets take salt and wind, and the lots are compact. That is a climb-and-rig job, not a drop.
Compact lots and VPO south of Edward Street
Around the station and the Village the lots are tighter — units, townhouses, shared drives. Further out toward Hampton, Highett and Bluff Road the streets open into ordinary house lots. South of Edward Street, toward Black Rock, a Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO3) can also apply — not the whole suburb. Highett starts immediately east and is two councils. SANDRINGHAM TREE PERMITS
Check what applies before you take a tree out or take a lot of canopy off
Sandringham is Bayside City Council (postcode 3191). Hampton, next suburb north, is the same Bayside council. Black Rock, next suburb south, is the same council and where we are based. Highett, next suburb east, sits in two councils.
A Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO3) covers Sandringham south of Edward Street — toward Black Rock — not the whole suburb. Work can still need a planning permit, a Bayside Local Law permit, or both.
Native vegetation and large canopy trees
South of Edward Street, a planning permit is usually needed to remove, destroy or lop native Australian vegetation that is more than 2 m tall with a trunk more than 50 cm around at 1 m up. On a house lot the statewide canopy rule (Clause 52.37, from 15 September 2025) usually means a large tree on the front or rear boundary: more than 5 m tall, trunk more than 50 cm around at 1.4 m up, canopy at least 4 m across.
Bayside Local Law
The usual size trigger is a single or combined trunk greater than 155 centimetres at 1 metre above ground. For a multi-trunk tree, add the four largest trunks. Leaf litter, views and shade are not a free pass.

3. Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Sandringham?
It depends. Sandringham is Bayside City Council. South of Edward Street — toward Black Rock — a Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO3) can apply to native Australian vegetation more than 2 m tall with a trunk more than 50 cm around at 1 m. The statewide canopy rule (Clause 52.37) can also apply to a large tree on the front or rear boundary. Bayside’s Local Law can cover a tree whose trunk is greater than 155 centimetres at 1 metre (single or combined; add the four largest trunks on a multi-trunk tree), a tree planted as a condition of an earlier permit, or a tree on the Significant Tree Register. 4. Is Sandringham the same as Hampton, Black Rock or Highett?
No. Hampton is the next suburb north — same Bayside council. Black Rock is the next suburb south — same Bayside council, and where we are based. Highett is the next suburb east — inland, denser around its own station, and split across Bayside and Kingston. Cheltenham sits on the south-east edge and is mostly Kingston. Sandringham is the station, the Village and Sandringham Beach. We work in all of them; send a photo and the suburb name so the quote is for the right address.
5. Who looks after street and nature-strip trees?
Bayside City Council owns street and nature-strip trees in Sandringham. Residents must not prune or remove a street tree. If a street tree is a concern, call Bayside on (03) 9599 4444.
6. Can you work around the station, the Village, the beach streets and the VPO lots?
Yes. Around Sandringham station and the Village the lots are tighter — shops, townhouses, shared drives and a chipper plan. Down Melrose Street to Sandringham Beach the lots take salt and a tighter carry. South of Edward Street we also check VicPlan for VPO3. Further out toward Hampton and Highett the streets are ordinary house lots. We plan those as climbing and rigging work, and we check whether the chipper or grinder can sit on the street or needs a longer carry.
7. Can you help with measurements and an arborist report?
Yes. We can measure height, trunk circumference and canopy spread on site, and arrange a written arborist report when Council wants supporting documents. We do not lodge the application, and we cannot promise an approval. The owner lodges and holds the permit.
8. How much does tree work cost in Sandringham?
